It really depends on what you mean by "biggest influence." Biggest influence on top pro drummers or biggest influence on hobbyist drummers?

My choices are those , who, in each decade, have influenced the most young drummers:

50s:

Buddy Rich

60s:

Ringo Starr (made everyone want to play drums !!!)
Joe Morello (idol for the jazz newcomers)
& Buddy Rich !

70s:

John Bonham
Tony Williams
Billy Cobham
Bobby Colomby
Danny Serafine
and again: Buddy Rich

80s:

Neil Peart (again, like Ringo, has been the reason for many new drummers)
Dave Weckl: (The birth of so many Weckl clones !)
Simon Philips
Steve Gadd, of course !
and Buddy Rich !

90s:

Buddy Rich again... !
Virgil Donati (started a whole new style of drum playing)
Steve Smith - his great clinics formed new drummers.
Horacio Hernandez (made us more aware of the clave)
and Buddy Rich !


2000 up to now:

Marco Minnemann (brought independance to new heights)
Thomas Lang (thrilling feet speed, etc)
And Buddy Rich !

The future:

Louis Armstrong...

Without Louis I think things would be a lot different. Most of what we do as 'folk' musicians (ie. not classical) comes from Louis....

The sense of time and space.
The art of improvisation
The idea of personality in a musician
The use of non pitched sounds or effects
The vocabulary upon which we draw
...and ofcourse, SWING.
